We are now in the throws of a recession. There is a large amount of uncertainty going on and with that businesses are having to make drastic decisions to stay afloat. Some businesses may not have the best intentions right now, so its important for you to be mindful and stay alert of any potential scams that may come your way. Here are some use tips to protect yourself.
Ask tough questions - Ask a vendor to provide references as if they don’t, it maybe that they may have something to hide. There maybe vendors that will try to conjure up phony references so get suggestions of vendors from friends whenever possible.
Do your homework - Call the local Better Business Bureau, which records the number of complaints filed against a vendor. You can also contact the Department of Consumer Affairs. The Department of Consumer Affairs will inform you if a lawsuit has been filed against the vendor.
Shop Around - Get competitive bids and estimates and let your potential vendors know you are comparison shopping. This lets companies that you mean business and are serious. There are many people out there that will take the first deal with the excuse that they didn’t have time. Don’t fall into that time, the time you take can save you thousands.
Get it in writing - The most common forms of wedding rip-offs aren’t the no shows, but the substitutions that often happen at the last minute. Make sure to get everything in writing even substitutions! You have the right to acceptable subsititutions and not take anything that is given to you. Also look out for any hidden fees, such as set-up fees, waitstaff and cleanup charges.
Pay with a credit card – You have total control over the situation by paying with plastic. Buy paying with plastic you can stop charges from going through and conduct investigations when necessary. Never pay in full until the service has been provided and ask receipts of all your vendors for any deposits that are made.
Document everything and have your proof on hand - Buy a notebook binder or folders containing all your contracts and receipts to your wedding. If at any point you are meeting with a vendor and they try to make a change the agreement, you are armed and ready!
